I suppose the first thing to do is to get the formalities out of the way and say “I was not paid for my review and am doing this of my own volition.” But of course we all know I’m about as formal as a paper plate at 5-star restaurant, so there you go. Now on to the point of this post…
It’s a very rare and humbling time when an author asks for you read her book before she finishes the final edits and sends it to the publisher. While sometimes we get a glimpse into early snippets of the book, having the full manuscript to read and review was a thrill in and of itself. The Taber File is the last of S. J. Garrett’s 3rd District series, and one that everyone who’s read her books has been anxiously waiting for. While I’ll honestly admit you could, in theory, get away with not reading the first books in the series (Garrett does a great job of giving a bit of background to remind the reader of the District), I wouldn’t recommend skipping the others. Each “file” (or book) leads to this final one and have some of the best re-tellings of well known fairy tales as well as some originals.
This final book, though, takes the cake. Insert Greek Mythology, throw in a bit of fairy tales, and mix with originality and you now have the Taber File. Each book I read of the series became my “new” favorite and this last one did not disappoint. I’d venture to say it even rivals some of the most widely published authors. Garrett’s talent for imagination, magic, and story-telling never knows any bounds. Finally, we’re given Rhianna’s story and get to see everything wrapped into one large gift of “so THAT’S why!” Unlike the previous books, which correlate multiple family members and stories into “mini files” this one focuses on Rhianna’s past (and present) while also bringing in previous characters to round everything out in the final, epic battle (hence why I wouldn’t recommend skipping the past books!).
So there you have it. The book is awesome. I wish I could go into more detail but I don’t want to spoil anything for the future readers. As it is, I feel as if I’ve been repeating myself over and over again, but y’all probably don’t care. So go stalk S. J. Garrett’s website and subscribe to her newsletter so you can make sure to get the news when she starts pre-orders of the Taber File. You can also check out her Facebook page for updates too, but her newsletter is pretty cool looking and she doesn’t send countless emails or anything obnoxious like that. And, if you feel so inclined, send her a message or post on her Facebook page and beg her to publish the entire series into one book (because that’d just be awesome-sauce!). Hopefully with enough response she’ll make even our dreams come true. 😉
Until next time where I’ll hopefully have something to say on my latest book – this is Ronni Mae Knepp, photographer and author and mom and veteran and way too many other things to list, signing off. Have a good day everyone and make sure to love each other.
